Purpose: Perform plant cost accounting duties with emphasis on determining, analyzing, and controlling costs associated with the manufacturing process including margin analysis, target costing projects, process constraints, tracing costs back to underlying activities, etc.  Assembles and interprets cost data for the use of management in controlling current and future manufacturing operations.

 

Major Tasks, Responsibilities & Key Accountabilities:

Item Set-up Process including ECO process; Cost Changes and Work Center Rates

  • Work with operations at assigned facilities to implement corporate process for new item set up including cost set up and evaluation of margins based on sell price at quoted/anticipated volumes.  This includes use of Engineering input for Bill of Material and Routings set-up.
  • Work with operations to evaluate engineering change orders, raw materials costs, manufacturing methods, outside process costs to determine impact on standard cost and anticipated margin impact.
  • Determines best method, and implements for applying overhead to manufactured products on an annual basis.

 

Variance Analysis

  • Coordinates regular variance analysis including Purchase Price Variance, Distribution Order Variance, Shop Order Variance, and process constraints.  Result of variance analysis is explanation of valid variances and gross margin impact, correction in base information to correct variances when applicable, or input to support changes to standard cost.
  • Monitor production efficiencies against established standards, including analysis of actual manufacturing costs and preparing periodic variance analysis report comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
  • Provide facility support to monitor and analyze utilization of labor and other critical resources.
  • Provide interim month analysis of transactions and correct errors prior to month end through production of a mid-month P&L and variance analysis.

 

Inventory Valuation and Reconciliation

  • Monitor inventory transaction process and identify appropriate coding to the general ledger.
  • Evaluate cycle count process ensuring that inventory balances and open shop orders are accurate and systemic transaction process errors are identified and corrected.
  • Assist operations in inventory evaluation, obsolete analysis and obsolete disposition.
  • Reconcile inventory accounts monthly for select locations.
  • Provide monthly analysis of general ledger inventory balance changes by product line for select production locations.
  • Assists production and inventory control by developing and implementing proper inventory procedures including training of personnel.
  • Coordinates and directs periodic physical inventories of location and company inventory and products as needed by developing and implementing proper inventory procedures including training of personnel.

 

Forecasting and Budget Process

  • Assist in annual budgeting and quarterly re-forecast of sales and variable cost.
  • Compares actual monthly gross margin results to latest forecast for assigned product lines.

 

Pricing/Quoting/Procurement

  • Work with sales and operations with process to provide accurate cost information to quote new business.
  • Report on breakeven points for products, work centers, and factories.
  • Work with Procurement on costing of new items, make vs. buy, timing of significant part/component purchases
  • Work with Operations on determining alternative uses of slow moving parts

 

GL Coding

  • Periodically evaluates work center and labor class rates against Direct Labor payroll department costs and coding to determine if rates and department payroll costs and personnel are accurate.  If necessary, adjust work center rates or request corrections to payroll department coding. 
  • Monitor purchase order release process for certain Inventory/Rework transactions and account coding to general ledger. 
  • Monitor vendor returns and debit memo process ensuring that transaction process is followed and general ledger account coding is accurate. 

Financial Statements/Metrics

  • Working with the product line managers of assigned product lines/facility, perform gross margin analysis for all product groups to analyze profitability.  Analysis may include:
    • Customer profitability
    • New product profitability
    • Product life cycle profitability
    • Mix/Margin analysis by customer and/or by item grouping
  • Provide Operations and Product Line management regular analysis of key indicators including monthly analysis of P&L variable cost.
  • Assist in the preparation of the Company's monthly financial reports.

Other

  • Develop queries and databases for standard and ad hoc reporting
  • Develop permanent reports used by operations as needed
  • Analyze capital budgeting requests that require a net present value calculation.
  • Provide financial support for lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide assistance as required to complete the annual external audit of the Company's financial statements.
  • Other tasks as may be assigned

 

Nature & Scope:

  • Reports to CFO
  • Does not supervisor others or has direct reports
  • Position requires regular activities of frequent walking, talking, listening and occasionally standing.
  • Must occasionally be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university
  • 5+ years related experience in a manufacturing environment;
  • Strong knowledge and experience in standard costing, overseas outsourcing, project leadership of costing initiatives, and providing cost accounting for a large number of parts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Complex costing experience within the electronics components, telecommunications or injection molding industry
  • Strong Information Technology (IT) skills.
  • To perform this job successfully, employee should have strong computer skills including intermediate to advanced Excel, MRP and database applications. Experience with IFS ERP system a plus.
